Description
TearScience LipiScan and LipiFlow System
LipiScan and LipiFlow work together to diagnose and treat meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is a blockage of the eyes’ oil-producing glands. LipiFlow complements LipiScan procedures by helping to treat dry eye syndrome caused by MGD. By combining gentle massage and heat, this directly treats the meibomian glands to improve gland secretions. This treatment is considered convenient for many patients, as it is a drop less option, and reduces the need for daily eye drops. The entire procedure is safe and comfortable and is performed in our office in under 15 minutes.
LipiScan Dynamic Meibomian Imager (DMI-1000)
Introduced in 2016, LipiScan is the first dedicated high definition gland imager designed to allow eye care professionals to image meibomian gland structure efficiently in busy practices. The first dedicated HD meibomian gland imager designed for efficiency and versatility. With a small footprint and user-friendly design, the LipiScan with Dynamic Meibomian Imaging (DMI) was designed to make high-definition meibography accessible for any practice. The durable yet lightweight device was designed for workflow maximization and easy integration into busy practices. Quickly image an eyelid in about 10 seconds.
How the LipiScan System Works
- Workflow maximization with fast capture of meibomian gland images
- Small footprint and lightweight (25 lbs) for optimal versatility
- Fast and intuitive operation for seamless integration into routine workups
- Renders high-definition image of meibomian gland structure
- DICOM compatibility to export images to EMR
Practice Workflow Integration: Rapid high-definition meibomian imaging, easily integrated into any practice workflow.
Patented Dynamic Meibomian Imaging: DMI renders a multidimensional view of meibomian gland structure with simultaneous integration of dynamic surface illumination and adaptive transillumination technologies.
Routine Assessments: LipiScan offers a fast and intuitive gland imaging option allowing physician assessment of meibomian gland structure during routine workups in any practice setting.
Efficient Practice Use: LipiScan can image both eyes in about a minute, and at less than 25 pounds it’s easily transported.
LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System (LFTP-1000)
The TearScience LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System, is a medical device used by physicians in addressing Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). It consists of a Console and a single-use sterile device, known as the Activator, and has a drug-free mechanism of action. Eye care professionals use the LipiFlow System to treat MGD patients in-office with confidence and efficiency. The LipiFlow System represents more than 10 years of dedicated research. A phased pressure profile with adaptive force equalization and proximal-to-distal peristaltic motion evacuates gland contents as the inner lid is gently heated.
How the LipiFlow System Works
- The procedure canters around the breakthrough Vector Thermal Pulse Technology (VTP)
- After an initial anesthetic drop, no drugs are required for the procedure
- The LipiFlow system safely delivers therapeutic energies to the meibomian glands while protecting the delicate structures of the patient’s eye
- As a result, the obstructed meibum is liquefied and pushed up and out of the gland orifices
- Contoured design vaults the cornea and protects the eye
- Heat and pressure are regulated with redundant sensors
The Science Behind LipiFlow
The sophistication of the devices centers around the Vector Thermal Pulse Technology (VTP) which analyzes feedback from sensors on the Activator to maintain consistent heat application and a phased pressure profile with adaptive force equalization.
Vectored: The vaulted interior shield of the Activator protects the cornea while multi-point sensors monitor and regulate heat and pressure throughout the treatment. A maximum therapeutic temperature of 43 degrees Celsius is applied directly to the inner eyelid where the glands are located, while protecting the eyelid or delicate structures of the globe.
Thermal: Proprietary heating technology ensures precise temperature regulation with continuous feedback and consistent heat application to the meibomian glands. The insulated and vaulted design of the Activator protects the cornea from unsafe temperatures.
Pulse: Intelligent pressure feedback loop sends pulsed sequences to expel blockages and stagnant material from the gland. The custom pressure sequence maximizes gland clearing while device design protects the eye from unnecessary intraocular pressure.
